Charity and Service

Caritas Salford
During our Advent campaign in 2023 we supported Caritas Salford by raising money to sponsor a room. This donation allows people who are experiencing homelessness to have access to a safe space in supported accommodation and support to people as well as young families to get the help they need. We managed to raise £1500 which is enough to provide one room with brand new bedding, towels, furniture, kitchen accessories and decoration for a homely start towards independent living.

CAFOD
Throughout the academic year we raise money for CAFOD. In 2023-2024 we invited CAFOD in to speak during our Mission Week, where they got to meet with lots of our students, explain the work they do and how their donations help those people in need. As part of our Lenten campaign all our KS3 classes took part in ‘The Big Lent Walk’ where our students accumulated walking miles to raise money and remind people of the challenges that others face getting to school every day.

Year Group Charities
Every year group in school decides on a charity that they would like to support throughout the year. During this time form groups raise money in a variety of ways from bake sales to charity football matches!

Pensioner’s Party
Each Christmas we host a pensioners Christmas party for pensioners in our local area. Our students serve them a Christmas dinner and host entertainment during their meal.

Pre Loved Prom
Each year our Sixth Form team host a ‘Pre loved prom’ sale for students in year 11 and year 13. This allows students to purchases dresses, suits, shoes, bags and accessories at a discounted price so they can enjoy all aspects of the planning and preparation for their leavers events.

Urban Outreach
Urban Outreach is a Christian charity providing food for households in crisis; and person-centred support for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable adults and young people in Bolton. Established in 1990 their core aim is to be consistently dependable, creative, challenging and inspirational in the support and care we provide across our town.

As a school we have pledged £1000 to support the Meals on Jesus campaign for Urban Outreach. This money will be used to provide Christmas dinners to families in need around Bolton this Christmas. For more information about the work of Urban Outreach please visit their website by clicking here.

Student Leadership

Duke of Edinburgh
At Thornleigh we offer the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award to our Year 10 students. There are four sections to complete at Bronze level. They involve helping the community/environment through volunteering, becoming fitter and healthier by taking up a physical activity, developing new skills, and planning, training for and completing a camping and hiking expedition.
