An Inspector Calls
On Wednesday the 18th of December, the English department delighted Year 10 students with a script-in-hand performance of J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls.
Performed by teachers, the event aimed to bring the text to life for students studying it as part of their GCSE curriculum - and it was a resounding success.
The performance struck the perfect balance between education and entertainment. Each teacher captured their character’s essence brilliantly, from the pompous Arthur Birling to the enigmatic Inspector Goole. Despite being script-in-hand, the minimal staging worked to the performance’s advantage, directing all focus to the powerful dialogue and themes. Students later remarked on how the performance clarified their understanding of the text as well as being a really fun and different way to spend a Wednesday morning!
The English Department would like to say a huge thank you to the cast and crew, and all those who supported the event on the day and helped to make it a success. The biggest thank you of all to Year 10, whose behaviour was exemplary throughout.
Overall, the event was a creative and engaging way to enrich Year 10s study of An Inspector Calls. It not only reinforced key themes and ideas but also inspired enthusiasm for Priestley’s work. It was a memorable experience that undoubtedly enhanced students’ appreciation and understanding of the play.
