Key Stage 4 GEOGRAPHY

Year 10

  • Urban Issues and Challenges - Students study the movement of large proportions of the population towards towns and cities and the issues that this creates in both high-income and low-income countries.
  • Rivers (The Physical Landscape in the UK) - Students discover how rivers shape the physical landscapes of the UK, as well as the causes and responses to river flooding.
  • The Changing Economic World - This unit looks at the reasons why there is a global uneven distribution of wealth and how we are attempting to reduce global poverty, with specific reference to Nigeria as a case study example.
  • Coasts (The Physical Landscape in the UK) - Students learn how the coastal landscape of the UK has been created, then how this can lead to conflict and issues. This unit continues to study management techniques for coastal erosion.
  • Fieldwork - Students complete two fieldwork investigations, analysing the interactions between human and physical geography. These are completed outside of school for one day trip. On returning to class, students write up their findings and evaluate their investigation methods.

Year 11

  • Tectonic Hazards - This unit is concerned with the causes of tectonic hazards, such volcanoes and earthquakes, and their impact on people who live locally. Furthermore, the unit discusses a range of different management techniques.
  • Weather Hazards - The unit looks at the formation of tropical storms, as well as the causes and impacts and responses to extreme weather in the UK. Hurricane Katrina is studied as a detailed case study.
  • Climate Change - This unit discusses the evidence for climate change, its human and natural causes, as well as mitigation and adaptation techniques.
  • General Resources and Energy - This topic deals with the issues relating to the uneven global distribution of food, water and energy. Students discover management strategies for this, whilst focusing on sustainable energy consumption.
  • Decision Making Exercise - In the final 12 weeks before their external examinations students are provided with pre-release material from the exam board. Students analyse this information in preparation for a series of comprehension tasks.
